Assignment 3A – Your Entrepreneurship Story

Your Entrepreneurship Story

My closest encounter with entrepreneurship is within my own family. My father has now for the second time since living in this country that he starts his own business. The first one had to be closed down during the 2008 recession, he was able to get back on his feet two years ago and establish his company again. He has done it mainly by himself, in the last year there was more costumers that were relying on him, but he was working alone. The income he was making was just starting to be enough to rent out a bigger space and he did not want to hire an employee, at the risk of problems. I decided as his daughter to step up and help him, the conditions were that I would get paid and find a way to work with him remotely and go into the office when I was in Miami.
Our desks looks slightly messy but this is our hub.
It is extremely difficult to work with family, it’s so easy to fall into a disagreement and then having to see them at home, for the first month him and I were at each other’s throats not only that, but I kept making careless mistakes. I was not into what I was doing, it finally sunk in that this was real people we were dealing with and it was costing others money when I had to go to lunch with him and a client. I realized that the success of the business depended on being passionate about what we were doing and being dedicated, because once I sat down and took the time to really learn what I was doing the work became enjoyable. I wanted to see profit go up and more work getting done.

It is not easy at all to run a business, even a small scale one like the one that we have. So many different details and expenses go on that all must be carefully accounted for, you really have to want it to make it work.
It does not sound that glorious but I added this class because it was under the requirements for the IA minor under the Innovation Academy. I chose this class over the other ones because it was an online class that I could do in off time when I wasn't stressing over my more difficult classes. That being said I do help to learn more from this class that I can transfer over to the business with my dad to be able to give him a better business model.

  1. Hi Stephany! I am also taking this class as a part of the IA minor. I like how you want to benefit from this class not only for yourself, but also for your dad and maybe take some things you will learn here and help them apply it to his entrepreneurial adventures. I like how you included two pictures in your post, definitely helps visualize what you are writing about. It would have been great though if you put captions under your pictures to give them some context.

  2. Hi Stephany, I found your entrepreneurship story very interesting. Similar to like your father, my parents also own their own company and have gone through the same hardships when it comes to having to work with family. At the end of the day it is important to remember that no matter what happens, family will always be there for each other. I hope your father’s business will have much success in the future!

  3. Hi Stephany! I found your entrepreneurship story very inspiring. The first business for your family didn't go so well, but they didn't give up. Instead, they started another one and try to push through the hardships. One of the first things that we learned in this class was that not every project is going to be a success, but the most important thing is to keep going. I think it's amazing your helping out your dad in any way you can. Overall, I think you did a great job at telling your story.

  4. Hi Stephany! I found your entrepreneurship story very attention-grabbing because you mentioned problems you’ve encountered through helping your father in his business. Establishing a company is definitely a difficult task and many problems can arise, moreover, I believe your father is grateful for your help. Disagreements will appear here and there, but as long as you guys find a way to settle it through simple discussions, you guys can come to a decision that satisfies both of you. Furthermore, I really admire your motivation to help out your dad on his business in the future regardless of all the barriers you’ve already encountered. Best of luck!
