"Delray Beach street will keep its trees but will not get bike lanes" by Lois K. Solomon of the Sun Sentinel
- The residents of Swinton Avenue in Delray Beach decided to keep the over 100 tress that line their historic downtown road in order to add a bike lane. The city had asked for $2 million in order to complete this project and they received a barrage of emails stating why the residents were against this, mainly because this would have disturbed over a mile of historic scenery and make it less green. The money is going to be used instead to repaving the existing road and to installing more sidewalks.
- The problem in this story was the lack of communication between the city and the county office which represents the voice of the people, had there been more communication this would not have been such a problem
- The people it affected were the citizens of the historic town that want to preserve the way that it looks for future generation.

- Miami international airport has become the gateway for commercial travel to Cuba, this is the season where there is an influx in the number of people that decide to travel to Cuba. Many airlines are weighing the cost and risks of providing these flights are filing to either opt in for more flights to Havanna or avoid it. South West Airlines is looking to expand to Hawaii instead, finding it a better business and even Fedex has decided to drop lines of cargo going to Cuba. However, American Airlines is hoping to get additional lines added because they serve South Miami which has the largest concentration of Cubans. American is facing opposition from Jet Blue that wants to add flights going from Fort Lauderdale to Havana, leading to a monopoly between the two airlines.
- The problem currently is that there are a few commercial airlines that will provide flights to Havana and that causes price surges as the people who own the airline can increase the rate as they see fit because they know regardless people will still pay for the ticket.
- The people here most affected is the Hispanic community, pirmarily Cubans, who thanks to Obama relations are now readily able to travel back to their home country, more flight options means more accessibility. But this also helps the Miami tourist industry with the influx of tourist that would need to pass through MIA airport to get to Havana.

"Florida Bill Would Give College Financial Aid to DACA Kids and Refugees" by Jerry Ianelli for the Miami New Times
- For children who were brought into this country as undocumented children. two Democratic Florida state representatives ave filed for a bill that would give dreamers, that are protected from deportation deferred action for childhood arrivals program. Essentially creating their own type of bright futures program that they could use as a fund to be able to afford attending college or university. Florida has the 4th largest population of DACA students that are in undeserved communities that deserve the chance to access the other programs that natives can get such as the Florida Farm worker Student Scholarship as well as many other need-based scholarships or grants awarded by the state.
- The problem is that other bills like this have been proposed in California, Hawaii, and Texas to name a few have been shut down by the government.
- THe people that is is helping are the DACA children and their families, it is providing more resources for them to be able to get a higher education that will keep them from the cycle of poverty and disenfranchisement that they face as dreamers.

"La Jamonteca gourmet store opens ham bar at Dadeland Mall" by Colleen Wagner for the Kendall Gazette
- Between the Cheesecake factory and Guest services at Dadeland Mall in Kendall they have opened up a independent gourmet Spanish ham and gourmet food provider. The first type of ham bar of its kind, which will be offering Jamon Iberico with is one of Spain's greatest treasures, a ham that renowned for its quality of craftsmanship and flavor. The stand in the middle of the mall will offer carving classes, the hand carved hams, and gift baskets all for your shopping pleasure.
- The problem with this is for as great as it sound to be placed in a crowded mall with tourist this stand will not see as many visitors as they expect, it is largely impractical to go shopping and carry around pounds of ham, it seems ambitious but not very lucrative
- The people that would benefit from this I assume would be the tourist that are visiting the mall, they have the chance to try something different, but again they would not be able to take this through customs and locals have other options for similar products.

The shelter is home to over 1,300 people that find is a place for healthy relationships, and victim advocacy. While the government is shut down the funds that would usually go to helping the patients have to diverted onto the workers, because of lack of funding. They are using donations and loans currently in order to be able to get people the money that they need, but the clients that live there and rely on these services are now suffering from utilities and lack of other services. his is a rural and undeserved area that is not being able to help victims move on from traumatic experiences.
- The problem is that the government shutdown which has lasted more than a month now is starting to have rippling effects throughout the economy and our communities. Affecting everyone and helping no one really.
- The people affected by this are the residents of clinic, that are being stressed out when this is supposed to help them work through their problems, and on a larger scale this is what is happening to many rural govenrment funded programs, they are all suffering.

Hi Stephany!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blurbs about the issues facing the many different communities in Florida. I really liked reading about the shelter for domestic abuse victims, as it is so important that institutions like this exist. However, I hate the fact that the shutdown is affecting the success of the organization and definitely wish that weren't the case. Great post!
Hi Stephany,
ReplyDeleteFor your first article about the residents wanting to keep the trees instead of adding a bike lane, I would totally agree that the people affected were the residents who actually wrote in and expressed their concern about the trees being removed, but I would alos argue that the city and county office who proposed the original 2 million dollar plan were alos affected. They then had to go back and change their plans to appease their residents that their offices represent. But overall, good summaries and interesting article choices, they kept me intrigued.
Hi Stephany,
ReplyDeleteMost of your articles are from Miami which is where I'm from! I was just recently at Dadeland mall and I didn't know about the ham shop which now that I know about it I will be trying it. The government shutdown has affected many people and it's sad how it's affecting shelters where these people have no where else to go. I enjoyed reading your articles!
