Assignment 25A – What’s Next?

What’s Next?

Existing Market

What I Think Is Next: I think the next step for MedTalks is to be marketed to some older generations, instead of just trying to focus on the younger people. The older people are the ones that realistically use clinics the most. So they need to be able to feel comfortable to use it and be able to work it without feeling lost or frustrated with it. The option for them to call is always there but there needs to be a way to make it so that they feel that the app is secure and also made for them and not just the more "millennial generation".

Existing Market Interviews
1. I went out and spoke with a girl from one of bio labs that has an internship in a medical clinic and I asked her what she thought about my service. I was delighted to find that she really liked the idea of this and thought that it was great for young people that want to get experience in the medical field. The interns that would be working in the clinic that are not readily able to clinical procedures could be in charge of running the app.
2. Spoke very simply to a mother of two, she has a one year old baby and a three year old toddler, so both of her kid are constantly getting sick. She gets so tired and overwhelmed with spending hours in the medical office an having to call the doctor or a nurse to talk them. She like the app because anything that makes her job easier and she is already on her phone ordering everything else so she might as well do that too.
3. I spoke to guy that has been only going to the doctor because his mom calls him to remind him. I asked him if he realized how complicated this was to do so I challenged him to do it and after a week back he came back and apologized. He apologized to me and his mom and said that I should be pushing this harder because he almost lost it.

Reflection
I think that many young people who have had the privilege of their parents or caretakers managing that aspect of their life are grossly unaware of what the medical system is like. I think that it is important that they become more aware of how to take care of themselves.

I feel like this app is a good way to transition for young college students to taking care of themselves. It allows them to learn how to be independent and that their is a lot that goes in to correctly managing their care. The third interview in particular really demonstrated how important it is to transition health care into the times and with the technology. With the first interview it shows that most young people only know how difficult it can be to deal with the medical world if they are involved in it.

As well as speaking with the mother which a is key demographic that I want to reach because if I want to make anybodies life easier it is them. They are the ones that are in charge of so many other peoples care and need to have it be as simple as possible.

New Market Interviews:
1. I again interviewed a different older gentleman, he works in business, nothing that is really related to the medical field. I asked him what he knew about making appointments and how much of his health care he was involved in. He is used to having his children or his wife help him and isn't really too sure. So I explained the service to him and why it was necessary and he seemed to really like it.
2. I spoke to an older woman and her daughter that acted as her care taker. The elderly woman is very sick so the daughter is constantly taking her to different appointments. The elderly woman told me that if had the app and it was easy to understand then she would be willing to use it to take some of the burden and responsibility off the daughter.

Reflection
I am not surprised or shocked that older people want to become more in charge of their own care. It is hard for someone who was independent in their lifetimes to now have someone else completely dominate the rest of their life, and I know that they also feel bad sometimes when they other person that they rely on whether it be a child or sibling, has to go out to work and then take care of that person. They want to be able to alleviate them of some of their pressure.

I have to be cognizant and aware of the fact that the app needs to be made for all people, I want to be able reach this market because it could also help with making it easier to understand. Because it would be so simple even your grandmother could use it. Something else that would help my service in being more accessible to people is making sure that it easily readable, because adult illiteracy is high, so the app should refrain from the most amount of jargon as possible and from not being overly complicated.

  1. Hey Stephany,
I think your next step is great. Opening up the market to older generations is a good idea. I'm actually really intrigued by the differences between age groups. It's obvious that they're going to have different medical needs but I still think that the differences between your interviews are really interesting. Great work!

  2. Hi Stephany,
I agree 100% that the app has to be accessible for all age ranges, and especially for the healthcare field, there is a larger majority of older people who are not at technolgy savvy, and who usually cant see/read as well. So possibly working with a disability organization to get your app certified in some way could be a good route to take.

  3. Hi Stephany,
I would've interviewed the same demographic if I came up with your product idea. Since it is an app, the younger demographic will be more willing to utilize your app. However, the older demographics are the ones that I believe are going to need to use it the most. These interviews that you took of the older generations are important because you have to find out what older people are willing and not willing to do in the app. I think you got some really good insight on how to create your app and what you should do.
